Press Release - March 27, 2011: Portland has a new World Boxing Champion!
On Friday March 25th, 2011, professional female boxer and Portland resident Molly McConnell, won both the WIBF and GBU jr. welterweight world championship titles. The fight against tough Texan, Kita Watkins, took place in El Paso, TX on the Bloodsport Championships promotion and was the main event of the evening. This championship fight was scheduled for 10 rounds and went the distance, with McConnell winning a split decision victory. It was a tough battle and Molly pulled out the victory in spite of fracturing her hand in the 6th round of the fight. The El Paso crowd was on its feet at the end of the fight to show their appreciation for the great effort put forth by both women. This victory and subsequent world titles puts Molly in with a very small and elite group of North westerners who have become world champion boxers, including greats Denny Moyer and Steve “Two Pound” Forbes. Molly is a former four time amateur national champion and is the most highly decorated female boxer ever to hail from the Northwest.
